Linn County’s Community Rating Service (CRS) class has improved from a class 8 to a class 7, increasing the floodplain insurance discount available to residents within unincorporated Linn County. This class change will go into effect May 1, 2020.

The Community Rating System is a voluntary incentive program run through the National Flood Insurance Program where individuals residing in participating communities can receive discounts on their flood insurance premiums. Discounts are calculated and awarded based on work a community is doing in four categories: providing public outreach, regulating development within the floodplain, working to reduce damages from flooding, and increasing flood preparedness. By moving from a level 8 to a level 7 Linn County residents receive an additional 5% discount on their flood insurance premiums, if their property is located within a 100-year floodplain in unincorporated Linn County, bringing the total discount to 15%. Current buyers of flood insurance will be eligible for this additional discount in January 2021 at the time of their policy renewal, while new buyers will be eligible May 1, 2020.
