Medical Examiner and Deputies

Overview

Iowa Code Chapter 331.801 requires a county to appoint a medical examiner for the purpose of determining the cause and manner of death of persons who die under unexpected circumstances. The medical examiner must be licensed in Iowa as a doctor of: medicine and surgery, or osteopathic medicine and surgery, or osteopathic medicine. The Board of Supervisors appoint the medical examiner and her or his deputy medical examiners. A two year term is served or until a successor is selected.
