Delinquent Property Taxes Due Prior to Tax Sale

The Linn County Treasurer’s Office would like to remind residents with delinquent property taxes that the deadline to pay delinquent taxes is fast approaching. Delinquent property taxes can be paid online, in person or by mail. If paying by mail or in person, payments must be received by the Treasurer’s Office by Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 5 p.m. Online payments must be made by 11:59 p.m. on June 17, 2012. Property with delinquent taxes will go up for sale on the June 18th tax sale.

Pay Online – Deadline: June 17

Online payments must be made by 11:59 p.m. on June 17.
Residents can pay property taxes online using VISA, MasterCard or Discover credit cards or by eCheck. eCheck payment of taxes costs 40 cents. Credit card payments have a non-refundable service delivery fee added to the tax amount due for the service of paying taxes online with a credit card. The exact amount due for property taxes and service delivery fee is calculated in Step 3 of this online service in advance of payment processing. Residents will have the opportunity to exit out of the payment process without completing the transaction if they choose to do so and pay by an alternate method. The County Treasurer receives only the property tax portion of the total amount due for online payments. To pay property taxes online, visit www.iowataxandtags.gov.

Pay in Person – Deadline: June 13

Property taxes can be paid in person at the Linn County Treasurer’s Office temporary location of Linn County West (Westdale Mall), 2500 Edgewood Rd. SW in Cedar Rapids, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The last day to make a payment in person is Wednesday, June 13 by 5 p.m. The Linn County Treasurer’s Office will be closed Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15 for its move from the temporary Linn County West back to its permanent location in the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center. In-person payments will not be accepted after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13.

Pay by Mail – Deadline: June 13 (receipt date)

Property taxes paid by mail must be received by the Treasurer’s Office by 5 p.m. on June 13.
If paying by mail, the mailing address is Linn County Treasurer, 930 1st SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. Residents who would like a receipt must include a self-addressed stamped envelope with their payment. Payments made by mail that arrive after the Treasurer’s Office closes at 5 p.m. on June 13 will not be accepted. The Linn County Treasurer’s Office will be closed Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15 for its move from the temporary Linn County West back to its permanent location in the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center.

County Treasurers collect property taxes on behalf of all jurisdictions in the county and then distribute the taxes collected. Approximately 16 percent of property taxes paid by Linn County property owners in incorporated areas are used to fund Linn County government operations and services. The remaining 84 percent of property taxes goes to the property tax payer’s city of residence, school district and other taxing bodies in the county. Linn County taxes represent slightly more than one-third of property taxes for rural residents.
