Michelle Kumar


Michelle Kumar is a senior at the University of Iowa majoring in International Studies and Ethics & Public Policy and will graduate in May 2020. She grew up in Urbandale, right outside of Des Moines, and attended Johnston Senior High School. 

Growing up, Michelle was always passionate about government and the law. After graduation, she plans to attend law school and get her master’s degree in Public Health. Eventually she hopes to work for the government in some capacity. 

During her time at the University of Iowa, she has been involved with the Daily Iowan as an opinions columnist, the South Asian Student Alliance as a vice president, and the university’s Mock Trial team as a competitor. In addition, Michelle currently she serves on the University of Iowa Student Government as their Media Relations Manager. 

Some of Michelle’s accomplishments include the Women’s Resource & Action Center (WRAC) Iowa N.E.W. Leadership Conference, working at the UI Institute for International Business, working for America Reads and volunteering with the Center for Worker Justice. Michelle’s advocacy work is focused on mental health, immigration and education.
