On March 3, 2009, local option sales tax won support from the unincorporated residents of Linn County and will fund road and bridge projects. Ninety percent of the revenue generated from the option tax between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2014 is targeted to be spent on secondary road and bridge projects. Click here to view a map showing the projects that invest the option tax wisely on long lasting improvements along the paved and hard surfaced system. This twenty million dollar investment in pavement quality and bridge upgrades will provide projects that will serve the residents of Linn County for 40-80 years. The improvement in the surfacing and structure of the major county roads will lower maintenance costs, reduce user costs associated with pavement defects, and allow funding to become available to expand the seal coat system. There are a few projects to directly seal coat routes that have been graded and rock based. These projects will provide completion of routes that are expected to pick up traffic and have been selected to be in the Three Mile Grid program. Seal coating provides additional funding in future years because of the formula used to allocate road use tax between counties. We will receive additional funding from the already existing gas tax based on the bituminous hard surfacing placed. This additional funding will provide for the maintenance of the larger hard surfaced system that we expect to create over time with rural development and increased traffic.
