June 5, 2018: Primary Elections

General Information

Primary elections will be held on June 5, 2018 for the Democrat, Libertarian and Republican parties. In the state of Iowa, Primary elections are considered a semi-closed primary.

What is a semi-closed primary? Eligible voters may vote in a party's primary only if they're registered as members of the party. However, voters are able to change their party affiliation when they vote absentee or on election day.

Voters will be asked for ID under the Voter ID Law.

Pre-registration will end on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

Absentee Voting Information

The first day our office can start accepting absentee ballot request forms is Monday, February 5th.

The first day ballots can be mailed out is Monday, May 7th.

The last day our office can receive an absentee ballot request form is Friday, May 25, by 5:00 p.m.


Ballots mailed back to our office must be postmarked by June 4, 2018 in order to have the ballot counted. Voters may request a postmark at the Post Office.

Early voting will begin in our office on Monday, May 7th and will run through Monday, June 4th, Monday through Friday.  

Election Services is located at 935 2nd Street SW in Cedar Rapids.


Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Satellite Information

A satellite station may be requested by filing a petition with the Election Services Department. The petition must contain signatures of at least 100 eligible electors living in the jurisdiction. The petition must be filed with the county auditor conducting the election by the filing deadlines listed in ยง53.11, which varies by election type.

The deadline to submit petitions for the primary is Thursday, April 19th by 5:00 p.m..
