Smoke-Free Housing

Under the Smoke-free Air Act, smoking is prohibited in the enclosed common areas of multi-unit residential 
buildings. However, the law does not regulate smoking inside private residences unless the residence is used as a child care facility, child care home, or a health care provider location. Common areas include but are not limited to

  • Elevators
  • Hallways
  • Lobby/ reception areas
  • Stairwells
  • Public restrooms
  • Management offices

Linn County Public Health and Smoke-Free Homes

LCPH partners with The Area Substance Abuse Council to provide free technical assistance to landlords in Linn County toward becoming smoke-free living facilities. Technical assistance includes providing support in establishing property specific policies that regulate smoking within units and on the property. In addition, LCPH supplys Smoke-Free Signage to post on the property and on buildings, provides smoke-free education for tenants and landlords, and assists tenants in registering their property with the online Iowa Smoke-free Housing Registry.
