Students who are Linn County residents and who are attending college outside of Linn County have two options:
They may maintain their Linn County voter registration and vote a Linn County ballot. This is most commonly done by voting absentee through the mail. However, students may wish to return home to vote in-person absentee or at the polls on election day.
They may register with the county / state where they are going to college and cast a ballot there. Students should contact the local county election official to obtain registration and voting information.
Students from another Iowa County or another state who are attending college in Linn County have the same two options. They may request and vote a ballot from their home county / state or they may register in Linn County and vote a Linn County ballot.
Whichever option is chosen, all students are strongly encouraged to get registered before the prescribed deadline. Meeting identification requirements for election day registration can be difficult for students. In Linn County, the pre-registration deadline is 10 days before general elections and 11 days before all other elections.
It is a felony to cast or attempt to cast more than one ballot in an election. Voting information is exchanged between Iowa counties and between states. Anyone found in violation of the law will be prosecuted.
