Voter Registration

In Iowa, you can register to vote or update your registration in six basic ways:
  1. Online through the Iowa Department of Transportation Online Service website. You will be transferred to the Iowa Department of Transportation website
    •  An Iowa Driver's license or non-operator ID is required to register in this manner.
  2. Through the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) when obtaining an Iowa driver license or non-operator ID in-person. 
  3. In-person at the Auditor's Office.
  4. In-person at state agency's offering services to the public.
  5. Paper voter registration form through the mail.
  6. On Election Day at your polling place.

Preregistration

In Linn County, the pre-registration deadline is 10 days before general elections and 11 days before all other elections. After that date, anyone wishing to vote, either absentee or at the polls, must go through the Election Day registration process. This process must be done in-person either at the Auditor's Office when voting absentee or at the polling location on Election Day.  
 
To avoid delays when voting, everyone is strongly encouraged to get registered or update their registration before the preregistration deadline. Voters who are not registered or have moved since the last time voting, may have to vote a provisional ballot if they cannot meet identification requirements at the polls.
 
Identification
In Iowa, showing identification when registering to vote is only required for those who missed preregistration and must follow the Election Day registration process. However, it is helpful to bring your Iowa driver license or nondriver ID, as our staff may ask for it to aid in processing your registration.
 
Verification
All new registrations go through a process of identity verification. If you provided an Iowa driver license number or nondriver ID, this verification is done through the Department of Transportation (DOT). If you do not have identification from the Iowa DOT, we will use the Social Security Administration to match your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
 
Confirmation
A confirmation card (voter ID card) will be mailed to the address provided on your registration form. This card serves to inform you that your registration has been processed and confirms to us that your address is valid. If your voter ID card is returned to us by the Post Office as undeliverable, your will be required to provide documentation proving your address when voting.
