The Criminal Division conducts crime scene processing activities, follow up investigations on initial crime reports, and initiates narcotics and vice investigations.
One Criminal Division deputy is assigned full-time to the local DEA drug task force.
The deputies assigned to the Criminal Division worked 1,062 assigned cases in FY17, including, but not limited to, burglaries, robberies, thefts, frauds, assaults, harassments, larceny of stolen vehicles, and sexual abuse. The Sheriff’s Office has a 70% case clearance rate, well above the national average.
The Criminal Division is also responsible for the Sex Offender Registry process and the issuance of handgun purchase and carry permits. As of July 2017, there are 353 registered sex offenders in Linn County.
Since January of 2011, upon the implementation of the “Shall Issue Law”, 24,452 non-professional permits to carry weapons have been issued to Linn County residents.
